Hull’s first ever TeenTech Technology event was held at the KC Stadium on the 14th May. The Humber Education Business Partnership (EBP) was chosen as one of the two areas in the UK to run the award winning TeenTech event created by Maggie Philbin, Science Broadcaster and Chris Dodson of the IoD. 300 students aged 12-13 had the opportunity to try their hand at experiments, handle leading edge technology and, most importantly met the engineers, technicians and scientists behind their 21st century lives.
Teen Tech showed young teenagers how their love for mobile phones and computer games could act as a gateway to a rewarding career developing the next generation of must have gadgets. Over 30 Local and National Employers in Science, Engineering and Technology provided intriguing and practical encounters. The event allowed students to be inspired by 'real' engineers and have the chance to find out what's really involved in their work and how important certain subjects like Maths and Physics can be for future careers.
Maggie commented “We have had very positive comments from companies and schools alike. Hull was a significant event for us as it was the first time we've run TeenTech outside the Thames Valley and the committed support and and excellent organisation from the Humber EBP team gave us a flying start.”
The South Hunsley Schools ‘Job Hunt Day’ was aimed at raising student aspirations and developing awareness of the range of opportunities for further and higher education, training and employment available. Students could meet and talk to enterprising, working professionals and the day consisted of a careers talk then small groups of around 8 pupils were assigned an Adviser – Cobus Business Manager, Vicky O’Grady. Their challenge was to make an A1 sized poster showing “A Day in the Life of Cobus” and the Cobus group did an amazing job.

Likewise, on the 13th July, Vicky O’Grady attended South Holderness School’s ‘People at Work’ Seminar Day. The day was to give pupils an insight into the world of business, and included a company presentation, personal career history and various activities from talking through career opportunities to how a business is promoted.
