Well recognised and known for their work to support voluntary organisations across the Yorkshire region, the Cobus Foundation – a charitable arm of Hull telecoms firm, the Cobus Communications Group [established 1991] has provided support and fundraising valued at almost £100,000.00 for local charities and good causes since 2010. After an extremely tough selection process, with many worthy suggestions from staff, Cobus finally chose ‘Hull 4 Heroes’ as its nominated charity in 2018.

After serving in the British Military for many years, once back home Hull 4 Heroes founder Paul Matson found himself adrift from mainstream society and struggling to adapt back into civilian life. After a period of suffering he ended up homeless until he found help, and with the support of the people around him managed to pull himself out of the situation, back to his family and set-up up a successful building business.

Paul’s experiences were the reason he jumped at the chance to be involved in DIY SOS Big Build in Manchester, where tradespeople, including ex-military, from across the country worked together to create a ‘Veteran’s Street’. On his return to Hull, he had the vision of creating a similar project here to help local veterans. He posted his thoughts on Facebook and was staggered at the feedback and the offers of help from the public and local businesses. Fast forward two years and Hull 4 Heroes is a registered charity with a strong, like-minded committee of 10 whose aim is to develop properties to provide for a veteran’s individual needs. Placing them amongst established or newly created communities whilst helping as many veterans and their families as possible through renovating existing properties, making them fit for purpose, and helping to make the transition back into civilian life and regular employment as seamless and comfortable as possible.

On hearing the inspirational story of how Paul set up the charity after suffering himself and battling back, the Cobus team were keen to get involved and see how they could help the charity through fundraising, helping to renovate houses as well as Cobus providing sponsorship support and awareness via its local and social media channels, and connecting the organisation to new businesses and other local charities and networking opportunities.

Michael Smith, Cobus MD commented “I feel that there’s a real synergy between both organisations regarding our positive outlook and work ethos, the energy and get-up-and-go mentality that Paul brings can only be an exciting step for all at Cobus. Paul has certainly inspired us all to get involved and continue to make a real difference to local people that need our help and support”.
