Cobus MD, Michael Smith, attended the annual #BattleoftheCodes charity dinner with Hull4Heroes in Gloucester last Friday night. After enjoying a lovely meal, entertainment, wine, and a Champagne reception the ‘after party’ went on into the early hours when Michael and his partner-in-crime Trevor from Hull 4 Heroes, decided that they’d be kind enough to offer their services to play the following day!

Mike Tindall MBE with Paul Matson (Founder of Hull4Heroes) and Nick Knowles

What started as joviality suddenly became a reality when the pair found themselves on the team sheet and in the changing rooms surrounded by true legends of both codes! The game captained by Mike Tindall [MBE, former England RU Captain] and Keith Senior [former GB/England RL player] was always going to be a tough encounter with players like Connolly, Barnett, Gleeson, and Delport to name but a few!

The game was streamed live reaching serving personnel all over the world allowing them to see legends of both codes (and Michael & Trevor!) putting on their boots to help support our veterans and spread the word, down South, with what’s happening up North, making new connections and gaining support for the new Veterans Village in Hull.

The game finished with a win for the Union boys on this occasion but weirdly both sides scored more points when playing the opposite codes rules!

British Royal Zara Phillips [MBE] was happy to present the winners and runners up medals with a keen eye on her Husbands bleeding nose!

Michael Smith Wrote: What a weekend eh! …great hospitality, and the chance to play in a game alongside some real legends of both codes – all after a 3:30am finish! …I’ve got to say that in the Union half I didn’t have a clue but the experience was great and one that I’ll remember for some time! …made some new friends, shared a pint with Nick Knowles, borrowed Keith Senior’s rugby boots and had a picture with the Queens granddaughter! …all-in-all I’ve had worse weekends!
